Efficiency of UAV-based last-mile delivery under congestion in low-altitude air

Emerging unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies have motivated logistics carriers to seek last-mile parcel delivery through the air so as benefit from its convenience and flexibility. However, UAV-based services are limited by several binding factors, such low battery capacities short range, which in turn require simultaneous use of a large fleet for commercial scale operations. In cases, congestion low-altitude will inevitably arise. This paper investigates self-organized UAV traffic flow altitude 3D airspace, formulates user equilibrium condition set partial differential equations. We propose finite element scheme numerically solve compute system performance. Two specific test scenarios freight systems studied, including one with conventional ground-based distribution facility, other novel concept airborne fulfillment center. evaluate operational cost energy consumption these under variety configurations. The results provide insights that could be useful logistic policy makers achieve efficiency sustainability delivery.
